Naga Laut - Mentawai

The Naga Laut is one of the best value charters in the Mentawais - this massive boat has room to move, as well as the horsepower to get you to where you want to be. Although the boat could sleep 14 surfers, it will sail with 8 and prefers to have maximum 10. Launched in late '99 Naga Laut has been continually upgraded by the owners and was originally designed exclusively for upmarket surf charters.

The skipper lives year-round in West Sumatra and has excellent local knowledge of swell and wind direction. Being a surfer himself, he works hard to find the best uncrowded spots, and he motors while the surfers sleep in order to get you the most time in the water.

The crew will be up at dawn preparing your breakfast down below while you get out there on the dawn patrol. The food is plentiful and very tasty. There is a good variety of Western and Asian style dishes. There is always salad and fresh fruit. There is plenty of water, juice, and beer.

Captain And Crew

Skipper - Captain Oyon: Oyon has long history of driving and working on boats in local waters and across Indonesia. Before joining Naga Laut, 1999, he captained Kuda Laut, one of the local inter island ferries.

Mechanic - Nasir: Both Oyon and Nasir have worked on boats together for the last 25 years. 'Bang Nas' is Padang born and bred and grew up alongside the beach close to where Naga departs. Nasir is the least visible crew member as he will often be tinkering out of the sight in the engine room.

Surf Guide - Yanto: Yanto is one of the most experienced surf guides in the Mentawai Islands. In the 90's he was already there discovering surf spots with the pioneers of the Mentawai. He worked for Great Breaks International and SKM on different boats. Yanto does a great job as surf guide as he really knows the conditions and is able to get you to the right places with low crowds. He also has a digital CANON with 300 zoom so will spend part of his time getting photos.

Cook - Boy: At the end of 2003 Naga Laut were fortunate to have Boy join the boat. He is an adaptable and dexterous cook and you can expect to be served meals ranging from fresh baked focaccia to roast chicken dinner to a full Chinese spread. He does a great job producing a variety of meals to suit varied tastes. After dinner however, you will often find Boy and Nasir sitting on the back deck concentrating seriously in a fishing duel!

Guest Manager - Anton: Anton is always on the spot to make sure the needs of all guests are looked after whilst they are onboard. Anton is really helpful and keeps everything tidy.

Boatman, Deckhand - Hamzah: The ever smiling 'Da Am' is always on standby to drop you on the peak and ready to give you a ride back to Naga when you are done surfing.

Accommodation

5 x Twin share individual cabins with air conditioning
The interior is beautifully finished in polished local timbers with a spacious living area it provides all the amenities of home - including full air conditioning, satellite phone, E-mail, TV, DVD, VCD, fridge, & freezer.

We had an awesome trip. Had good waves everyday. Yanto is the best guide. Everyday he was onto it and wind, swell, everything. We had waves to ourselves on a couple of different days. One arvo we even got macca's to ourselves. We had all types of waves from fun to heavy. Food was awesome and the rest of the crew were no worries. Would book with Yanto again for sure. Thanks heaps.

Excellent trip. Almost got sick of surfing some days! Plenty of swell for the entire trip. Yanto our surf guide is the best in the Mentawais and was on the ball with swell and crowd predictions every time. We arrived at most breaks with either no or minimal crowds. Food and service from crew on the Naga Laut was awesome and couln't be faulted. The guys that were put on board to make up the numbers fitted in well with us and we all had a blast. Have already recommended the boat to others. Awesome trip, gunna have to go again for sure!

This was my first trip to the Mentawai, something that I have been wanting to do for some time now. Having said that I guess you could say that my expectations were quite high of what I should expect from the trip. Thank you so much Rhonda for making the planning of the trip a breeze, you took all the work and worry out of it for us so all we had to worry about was selecting our quiver and getting on a plane. The boat "Naga Laut" was very roomy and comfortable, I would definately recommend this boat and crew to anyone thinking of doing a boat charter. The crew onboard were very professional and the food was first class the whole trip. Thanks "Boy". Our surf guide "Yanto" a local from the Mentawai, would have to be the one person to tie it all together. His knowledge of the waves and conditions is second to none. On more than one occasion we found ourselves surfing quality waves on our own with just the 7 of us from the boat. We were very lucky to have good to excellent swell throughout the entire trip. The photography service that Yanto provided was popular with all onboard and once again very professional, adding valuable picture memories of this Trip of a Lifetime. I honestly can't find anything about the trip, from the initial contact with Rhonda to our transfers back to our flights out of Indonesia to complain about. If you are thinking about doing a trip to the Mentawai, don't look past the "Naga Laut" and Yanto and his friendly and competent crew. Thanks Perfect Wave Travel Co. I had a wonderful trip on the Naga Laut. The boat was a great size and was comfrotable. The crew were great, always smiling and helpful and providing great food and service to us. The surf guide Yanto was very knowledgable and made a good plan for us based upon the weather/swell conditions and the abilities of all the surfers. I would recommend the Naga Laut for any trip to the Mentawai's.

Waves could have been better as i have been to the Ments before and but we surfed everyday and there was a couple of days that were really good. The boat and the crew were awesome, with captain and crew doing everything a guest would want from them and more. The food was wicked and the beers always cold. Yanto the guide was onto it everyday with a plan and also took some great photos of us in the surf. I will defiantly book the Naga again. Thanks to The Perfect Wave to as from the moment we first talked to Jamie to the call when we got back, you were great to deal with and very professional. All our travel was painless and no hiccups at all. Thanks again to everyone and look forward to next years trip with you guys.

To Jamie and Rhonda at the Perfect Wave, Just thought I'd let you know, Stephen had a fantastic time on the surf trip. Thankyou to you both for your efforts with such a rush job. Stephen said everything ran smoothly. He raved about the waves, the boat, he said the staff on the boat were fantastic, friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for you. Said the food was like restaurant food, and plenty of it. He honestly couldn’t fault anything. He had an absolute ball. Loved every minute of it. Didn’t end up using one of his flights (from Padang to Jakarta) as the captain of the boat managed to get him on the flight from Padang to KL, which worked out better for him as he was with all the boys. Once again, thankyou so much for everything. You definitely do your jobs very well and I know for sure Stephen would recommend you guys to anyone he hears of wanting a great surf trip. The trip was absolutely fantastic. I have been on four trips to Indo in the last five years and this was the best trip by far and I will definitely be back. I didn't get the biggest waves of my life nor the biggest barrels but the end product was unreal. The crew are helpful with a cautious captain organising our travel around the Mentawais. The boat was well above my expectations. I do have a motto "low expectations gives you a high success rate". The surf is safe as the waves break into deep water including Rifles, Maccas and HTs on a higher tide. On the second day I was lucky enough to surf 5 different breaks in one day that incorporated almost 9 hrs of surf time. What more do you want in a day.......Several bintangs and four huge meals .......and of course fruit in between with a Pooh man Nomination!!!!!!! (Pooh man - too long a story for this email) Not to forget some light humorous conversation after dark…. Mike - NSW June09
