Samudra Biru - Mentawai

Samudra Biru, formerly known as The Nusantara, is a 70ft x 22ft power cat and was custom-built in 2000 and launched in 2001 specifically for doing surf charters in the Mentawai Islands. For 2011, Samudra Biru comes with renovations and a new sleek dark blue paint job.

Samudra Biru was designed for speed, to be able to put guests on the best waves at any given time. Not only fast, she is also comfortable, both under power, even in rough seas and at anchor. They receive many compliments from guests on how well they have been able to sleep on Samudra Biru. Guests who have been on other Mentawai surf charter boats compliment this boat on its superior sleeping accommodations. A good night's sleep is so important on your surf trip, after you've been going hard all day, you want to be fully charged and ready to go hard again the next day.

The owners and crew have years of experience servicing guests, getting the best surf, providing safe and fun charters and exciting surf holidays. They have many return guests, some returning for their 4th, 5th, even 6th trips. They take their guests to the appropriate surf spots for their abilities, and don't push them out into surf that they are not capable of handling. Not only are they about getting the best surf for their guests, they also provide a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Captain & Crew

The Indonesian captain Ateng is from East Java near G-Land. He got his start in Benoa, Bali and has worked on boats his whole life. Also an accomplished surfer, he has been in the Mentawais for 15 years with 12 years as a skipper. He holds his Indonesian Captain's license and Indonesian Seaman's Book. He has done well over 200 surf charter trips and intimately knows every facet of surfing the Mentawais. Ateng has been with the Nusantara/Samudra Biru over 6 years and is famously well respected in both the Mentawais and Padang ... he is considered a legend.

The Samudra Biru American owners/operators are all experienced surfers with years in the Mentawai Islands. The boat will be accompanied by one of the owners or another very experienced westerner acting as guide. They all know the waves, the weather, the reefs, the tides and the intricacies of each surf spot, and openly share that knowledge with their guests to further their safety and their ability to make the most of each surf session at every surf spot. They also have secret and semi-secret surf spots for when conditions don't agree with the regular spots. They are consistently complimented by the guests for being at the right spot at the right time.

Samudra Biru has open air aft deck dining area to take in the sunset while you dine or watch the surf over breakfast/lunch; 24-hour access to cold/hot drinks/snacks; a big, open air, but covered upper deck for relaxing, viewing, prepping for your go-out;  safe, secure surfboard racks shaded from the sun; and surfboard-travel bag storage area protected from the sun and weather.

Samudra Biru was made by sandwich construction, a Divinycell foam core sandwiched between layers of epoxy saturated fiberglass. It’s like a big surfboard, it can't sink. She has a very shallow draft, just over 3'. She has a SeaFury propulsion system, a stern drive, a one piece unit that encompasses prop, rudder and exhaust.

Every year, the boat has been up-graded extensively, more than just paint. They try to make it a better boat each off-season. The boat still lives up to its original design as a high speed, passenger friendly, surf hunting vessel, just more comfortable.

Samudra Biru is also equipped with GPS Plotter navigation, radar, compass, and depth finder.

She meets all the safety requirements of the MMTA (EPRB, life jackets, flares etc) they have an extensive medical kit, two engines, two generators and multiple anchors, many connections with the local fishing/marine community, satellite phone and years of experience in preventing and treating surf related injuries.

Hey everyone, I just spent an 11 day charter on the Samudra Biru (Nusantara) in the Mentawais and it is by far the best surfing experience I have ever had! I have been on several boat charters in the past in other parts of the world and the Ments and the Samudra Biru definitely takes the cake! The Ments itself blew me away. There are so many waves to choose from and the best thing about it is you have something for most surfing abilities! Adam the captain and surf guide on board offered nothing but great service and 8 out of the 10 days surfing we had breaks to ourselves including hugely popular Macaronis and Rags Left in the South Island, call this luck, it was still awesome. We even found a new wave on what was thought to be a lay day due to lack of swell and poor winds, and named it Tattoo's because people got cut up on the inside reef, but nothing too bad! (see photo attached) To score those places with your new surfing buddies the only guys out was something I will never forget and a huge credit to Adam for finding this amazing break! As well as Adam's knowledge of the waves, swells and winds you couldn’t go past his personality and ease to talk to, great guy and made the charter very comfortable for all on board! I would highly recommend his services to anyone. The crew was also fantastic and didn’t let anything slip, they even brought drinks or chocolate bars out to you in the surf as well as took photos of us from the dinghy in the channell which captured everyones best waves or wipeouts on camera to look at in the theatre room that night during dinner! The food was spectacular with highlight meals being hamburgers, pizzas, pasta, fresh fish, spring rolls and sushi just to name a few! The boat itself has been specifically designed for surfers with board racks at the back of the boat to hold your quiver! And with 3 rest areas, one air conditioned theatre room with huge LCD TV, an outside chillout deck to watch the surf and have a few Bintangs with the rest of your mates and a chillout area behind the captains wheel with soft cushions you are never short of places to chillout! It also travels at a max speed of 16knots getting you to the breaks quicker than 70-80% of the boats in the Ments! If I could recommend any boat to anyone out there looking for a surf charter in the Ments I would 100% recommend the Samudra Biru boys and their operation 10/10 I was blown away!
