- Description
-
Crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, friendly people, spectacular coral reefs, world class surf breaks, abundant fishing, picturesque villages, fascinating cultures, idyllic palms and unforgettable sunsets make this region a travellers delight and an unspoilt, isolated paradise. What better way to completely experience all that is on offer than the simplicity and freedom of a live-aboard yacht charter.
The islands of the Bismarck Archipelago are untouched by mass tourism, untroubled by 5-star resorts and package tourists not interested in the culture of the country that they are visiting. Every experience that you have will feel like you are the first to experience it, the first person to visit this island village, surf this wave or snorkel on this reef.
Undiscovered waves going unridden? – Plenty of them. The Crew
Tiki Tu’s owners are Adam and Dani Smith. Both are originally from Melbourne, in Australia’s southern state of Victoria. Adam has been sailing and surfing his whole life, and with Dani spent most of their holiday time travelling and surfing in tropical island destinations for 10 years before coming to Papua New Guinea in 2002. They fell in love with New Ireland and the excellent sailing grounds, surfing, snorkelling and fishing that it offers, as well as the unique culture and genuine friendliness of the people. Dani brings with her over 10 years experience in Melbourne restaurants. Together they offer a comprehensive package, and are proud to show you the beautiful locations that they found in their initial trip to New Ireland.
The Boat
As the first surf charter operation in Papua New Guinea, Adventures In Paradise have been lucky to have pioneered some great surfing locations. Adam, your skipper, has been surfing for over 35 years and is the best person to take you surfing to the breaks in this area, many of which he was the first ‘white-skin’ to surf. All breaks are uncrowded reefs and points, most with an excellent anchorage nearby or right next to the break. Easily accessible, with heaps of variety, and open to the north-west swells that hit the area from November through to April. The surf averages 3-5 foot.
In an effort to promote sustainable development of the sport of surfing and surf tourism, the Niu Ailan Surfriders Alliance (NASA) manage and oversee Surf Management Plans in four areas of New Ireland.
Kavieng, Lavongai, East Coast and Central Coast
The Management Plans are essentially a surf quota system with prescribed base fees, and are not exclusive to New Ireland, as other forms exist in other parts of Papua New Guinea, with the aim of fostering local club development, community development initiatives, good relations and just as importantly, sustainable surf tourism development and a truly unforgettable PNG surfing experience.
Tiki Tu generally heads to the Lavongai area, but also does charters within the Kavieng area. You can opt to book into both plans to keep your options open. Or do a couple of days in the Kavieng area, then move onto the Lavongai area. Or you can just head out to Lavongai. The choice is yours.
All visiting surfers to New Ireland must pay the following fees, and be booked into the relevant Surf Management Plan(s):
- $25.00 per surfer Surf Association of PNG (SAPNG) levy,
- $10 per surfer per day Niu Ailan Surfriders Alliance (NASA) / Kavieng Surf Club (KSC) fee
There are no surf transfer fees on board Tiki Tu.
Adventures In Paradise are endorsed by the Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea (SAPNG), and are members of the Niu Ailan Surfriders Alliance. When booking with Adventures In Paradise, you can rest assured that you will be booked into the surf quota.
Guests aboard Tiki Tu are often surprised to discover that PNG has an indigenous form of surfing, practiced long before the arrival of the white skins and modern surfboards. Surf craft are usually discarded and reshaped pieces of outrigger canoe hulls and ridden either lying down or sometimes standing up. Crew are blown away by the stoke and spirit the local kids have for surfing. This is perhaps the most pure form of surfing experience available left on the planet. We suggest you see it while you still can. The best thing about cruising this area is the real possibility of finding that virgin wave. If you’re not the first person ever to have surfed it, you will certainly feel like you are. This is a true surfing frontier. - Specifications

Tiki Tu is a 10 metre performance cruising catamaran. She is light, allowing for excellent performance in light airs. She is spacious, with 56 sq metres of deck space, including a large forward trampoline to soak up the sun. She has an awning which covers the whole back deck to shade you from the sun and keep you dry during the tropical rains whilst at anchor. Tiki Tu is ideal for relaxing and peaceful cruising as she sits flat in the water without the constant roll that monohulls offer. Her draft is under 1 metre allowing her to enter shallow anchorages very close to the islands, and the reefs.
