The Chillhouse - Canggu, Bali

The Chillhouse is a traditional retreat situated in Canggu amongst the rice fields on the southern shores of Bali. This bali surf retreat offers guests’ quality accommodation and delicious organic meals, along with surf guiding, massage treatments and yoga sessions. It's a place where you can indulge in an unforgettable surfing holiday, filled with endless waves and maximum comfort.

The emphasis, of course, is on surfing, but their retreat isn’t just about chasing waves. They believe that the best surfing experiences are had when you are eating good food, sleeping in a nice bed, meeting interesting people and getting to know the culture you are visiting. It is their desire to make you feel at home.

Chillhouse offers customers a surfing program that is designed to optimise your surfing experience on two levels: Firstly, they try to make sure you are at the right spot at the right time, and secondly, they work on developing your surfing skills. To ensure they give you the maximum attention, groups are limited to five people. This way they can really work on your individual needs.

There are five luxurious Bungalows, The Surfers House and Tree Top Loft that are set amongst 1500sqm’s of exotic tropical gardens. It has been their aim to keep the natural, tropical atmosphere, so they have let the trees grow through the roofs or inside the bathrooms, rather than cutting them!

Bungalows

The bungalows feature a living space of roughly 20sqm. Two of them have a connecting door, which makes for an easy holiday with kids. One bungalow is bigger than the others and features an extra living room, which can be transformed into a bedroom in case a family opts for the Family Package.

The Loft is their most deluxe choice, situated on top of The Surfers’ House. Three stories high, the ground floor features an outdoor bathroom with double shower and double sink, the air-conditioned bedroom with king bed and spectacular views is on the first floor, and the chill-out bale’ on the second floor. It is equipped with mini-bar, safety deposit box and I-pod dock.

The Surfers House is laid out for 8 guests. On the ground floor there are three double rooms with stylish bunk beds, air-conditioning, and safety deposit boxes. There is a large, open communal living room which is the hangout and features a stereo, TV with heaps of surf DVDs and a fridge to keep your beers cold!

I had a very good time for someone travelling to Bali and Sumbawa for the first time. Accomodation was great and food was really great too. Indonesia is really a surfing heaven, and is easy going in most parts too. I would be keen to go back as its so cheap over there! Perfect wave had everything organised for me so all transfers were taken care of, all I had to do was work on surfing better!

Hi Gina Just thought I would let you know how our trip to bali & the chillhouse was. The Chillhouse far exceeded my expectations, we didn't get out of the airport for several hours after queuing up for VOA then to get thru customs and when we got out of the airport there was a huge crowd awaiting the arrival of the thousands of passengers that were filing out as such I thought we will never find our transport but almost instantly I saw the most obvious sign which was the Chillhouse logo on half a surfboard with our names written on it - this immediately caught our attention, we were greeted very warmly and introduced to others also collected (& waiting for us!) when we arrived at the van (airconditioned thanks) we were offered a bottle of cold water. Upon arrival at the Chillhouse the wonderful and always helpful Putu welcomed us and gave us all an information package and explained everything we needed to know - mealtimes etc whilst being served a fresh juice. Our bungalows adjoined each other with a common living area, both bungalows were beautiful and truly represented the exotic and tropical feel of Bali, as did the whole venue. We loved the communal dining/lounging/pool area where we all met up at mealtimes and lounging and meeting the many international soon to be friends, all with a common interest - surfing! The Chillhouse is the consummate surf camp & very chilled. We were paired up with the most professional and protective guides which we were fortunate to keep for the week, 'SuperNova & Gede', as well as Made & Danny. We were up at 4.30am almost each day to leave by 5am, though no later than 6am on other days, we would load up the van with the boards & head off before the wind & crowds & heat, we surfed everywhere or as many places as we could fit in 1 wk, Medewi, Kedunga, Old Mans, Tegus, Balian, Kuta Reef, Airport lefts, Kuta beach, Shipwreaks, Playgrounds & other names I can't recall. We went to bali as nervous intermediate surfers and come home 'shit hot' brave intermediate surfers, no thanks to our guides who in their easy and calm manner encouraged us to challenge ourselves, at each break they would show us where to paddle out, where the landmarks were, what the dangers were, where to sit in the line up, whether to go left or right all the while right beside us calling us onto the wave and cheering like crazy when we would go for it, I suspect they sometimes blocked other surfers so we could get the wave (though maybe don't make this common knowledge!). There were 2 incidents, 1 where my pal Janice landed on her board & badly injured her leg (not broken) & our guides cleaned the wound and were very caring, then again (same friend) collided with a stupid inexperienced learner in a critical zone at Shipwreaks which resulted in their legropes being tangled together, our guide Nova immediately paddled in and helped her get out of there. So I would say our guides were more than we could have asked for, I only wish I could have taken them home with me & so I may continue to be as brave as I was in Bali. The Chillhouse was located away from any touristy things, a venue set on a small street amongst other homes & rice fields, we cycled to Echo beach a couple of arvo's to watch the sun go down (& have Bintangs) & it only took about 15mins, so if you are looking for a venue with lots of shops & restaurants etc this may not be the place to go, however we were not seeking the 'tourist trap' so it suited us perfectly. If we wanted to it was only about 1/2 hr to Legian/Seminyak/Kuta depending on traffic. There was a book that noted activities/tours one could participate in each day & you simply had to write your name, I would thoroughly recommend the day trip via boat to Nusa Lembogen for a surf at Shipwreaks (my favourite) & playgrounds & the monkey temple. The meals were divine, each night was a 4 course meal including vegetarian if you are a vego. The Chillhouse is perhaps not a venue for non-surfing people but for those of us that want the best surfing adventure & not have to worry about a single thing, not have to find someone to take you to all the breaks, not have to find the breaks, to feel safe (kind of) with a guide beside you as you paddle into an unknown break, to be able to just lay back in the van and take in the sights after several hours surfing then arrive back to a varied and delicious buffet brunch, a massage, a dip in the pool or relax on your daybed with a book & laughs with your surfing buddies the Chillhouse is the place to stay. The only downside to this trip was getting sick on the last day and developed a chest infection which I have only just recovered from, hence the delay in my email to you (we got back on the 2nd Nov), though it's handy to know you can buy antibiotics over the counter in Bali at the chemist if you need ! Hi Gina, I had an amazing time in Bali and made allot of lifelong friends. It's definitely a place I will be going back to but I have decided to buy a place there so it won't cost so much next time round. I also made the most of the place and travelled quite a bit whilst there. Even got down to Nusa Lembongan. It's the closest thing to paradise. There were quite a few hidden costs there which I only found out about when it came to paying the bill at the end. I ended up paying an extra £160 ish pounds before leaving. Things like village fees and internet fees etc... Other than that, I had a fabulous time and would highly recommend it to anyone. My surfing improved drastically and by the end of it I was surfing 6-7 ft waves over coral reefs. It was an amzing feeling. I now have alot of other holidays planned for surfing but will be returning to Bali next May for a month, 1 week of which will be over in Australia to see my aunt. I didn't realise that it was only 4-5 hours flight away. Whilst I was there I also met a few pro surfers in Uluwatu as they were there doing photo shoots and competitions etc... It was amazing. I've even managed to keep in touch with them whilst they travel around. Thank you for your help in organising things for me and giving me a holiday to definately remember. You won't be forgotten.
