Ombak Indah Losmen is located in a very remote part of southern Sumatra mainland, an area that has only recently seen westerners arriving, chasing the great waves in the area.
English is hardly spoken or understood and you'll often be an attraction for the locals, who, while sometimes shy, are friendly, helpful and very curious about strangers. This place is somewhat similar to how parts of Bali were a few decades ago, surrounded by a vast coconut plantation.
The Losmen is locally designed with high ceilings, large windows and wide verandas to capture breeze, keeping you cool in the tropical heat. It is situated on just under a hectare of beach-front land right in front of 'Ujung Bocur', the longest and most consistent wave in the area. In fact, the wave starts from beyond the southern boundary and continues all the way past the northern most boundary of the property.
You can watch the waves peel down the point while you have your breakfast, or lunch. The staff are local Indonesians, who have a reasonable command of English and are committed to, and well trained in, looking after their guests. The place has a tranquil, laid back atmosphere, which is reflected in the how the place is surfed - with a spirit of equality, consideration and sharing.
There is no TV or DVD player… Just friendly staff, and guests from all parts of the world. So if you are not interested in learning how others live, sharing stories or just relaxing with nature, this place is not for you.
The Losmen is owned by a syndicate of 5 Australian east coast surfers, known as the 'Big Rock 5'. It is registered with all the required local Indonesian authorities and is becoming a welcome feature for regional tourist authorities.
- Accommodation

Ombak Indah accommodates a maximum of 30 guests. All rooms have fans. Linen and pillows and mosquito nets are provided.
Two levels of rooms are available:
Premium rooms - 3 x twin share, 3 x triple share and 2 x quad share: New, larger rooms with tiled floors accommodating 2-4 people in each, complete with en suite western style bathrooms. Beds have spring based mattresses. These rooms are reserved for Standard and Premium packages.
Standard rooms - 2 x single and 4 x twin share located at the back of the main building. Beds have foam mattresses and external shared 'mandi' style bathroom located a short walk from your room.
There is no hot water, just crystal clear, refreshing well water. The 'mandi' style bathroom has western toilets and typical Indonesian bucket and ladle shower.
Meals are served in a large common dining area overlooking the yard and reef.
Three meals per day are included, along with hot drinks during meal times. Breakfast alternates between jaffles, omelettes, fried rice or noodles, toast & spreads, pancakes all served with fresh fruit. Lunch and dinner are local style beef, chicken or fish dishes, served with vegetables and rice. Spices are toned down for the western palette and servings are generous.

The Losmen runs a small shop where guests can purchase basic necessities at reasonable prices, including: cold bottled water, beer, soft drinks, various snack food (chips, biscuits, chocolate etc.) soap, toothpaste, mosquito coils and repellent, batteries and so on.
Surfboard accessories are also available. There is also a local board repair service that can handle anything from minor dings to snapped boards.
Transport (bemos, vans & motor bikes) can be chartered through the Losmen at fixed prices. For the more adventurous, local public transport (bemos) runs regularly along the nearby main road.
The area is perfect for long walks along the beach, through the coconut plantations and local villages. There are good breaks in the reef for snorkelling, swimming and fishing. Further a field is the main town, with local markets, shops and restaurants. Day trips to other places of interest can be arranged from the Losmen.
There is a mobile phone at the Losmen for emergency use only. International calls can be made from the main town (1/2 hour away by bemo).
Surf Breaks
- Way Jambu - Way Jambu or Sumatran Pipeline, as it’s also known, is one of the most perfect waves around - but for experienced riders only.
- Mandiri - This quality beach break is a 20 minute drive from Karang Nyimbor.
- Osamas - These beach breaks is an ideal learner wave and conveniently close to the camp.
- Bali Village - On its day this left and right breaking wave is a must visit.
- Krui Left & Right - A quality bowly left hander that needs a bit of swell to start to work. Meanwhile, nearby Krui Right is a superb right hander, one of the best in the area but needs a bit of swell to start to work. While at Krui, you can also catch a boat to Banana Island (see breaks out of Drew's).
- Mosquito’s / The Peak - A heavy peak that offers a short but perfect barrel.
- Drew's Right - This idyllic right hander is the perfect surf spot if you want to surf on your own as although there are local people around, there are no local surfers. Breaking for approximately 100 metres, this right breaking wave offers a bit of everything - from decent barrel sections to big open faces. Unlike Karang Nyimbor, this wave’s entry (although steep) is relatively easy. Once on the wave various sections are on offer - depending on the size of swell and its direction. The end section will always close out - and can be pretty shallow. This wave breaks year round, but is offshore more in the off season. It faces more south east, but still receives a large amount of swell - as most swells are from the south or south west. The wave breaks on coral reef and therefore reef boots are recommended. Getting out to the lineup is quite straight forward - you just have to time your entry. Coming in can be slightly trickier on a lower tide as it can get quite shallow.
- Jimmy's Left - 10 minutes from Drew's, this world class left hander produces endless barrels.
- Jimmy's Right - A stone’s throw away from Jimmy's left, but nothing like it if you want heavy sucky barrels.
- Walur - Just a short drive from Drew's, Walur produces heavy sets of perfect waves.
- Banana Island - Take the short 15 minute boat ride from Krui to ride these two rarely ridden waves that break around the island.

Inclusions
- Accommodation - First night at Cipta Hotel (central Jakarta) remaining 12 nights at Ombak Indah Losmen. Accommodation at the Airport Sheraton Hotel can be arranged for the first night, price subject to availability.
- Meals - Breakfast in Jakarta + three delicious meals per day plus tea & coffee at the Losmen and a free large bottle of water daily.
- Transfers - All forward and return Jakarta Airport-hotel-Losmen transfers. Air-conditioned vehicles are used with a maximum 4 customers per vehicle.
- Flights - Jakarta-Bandar Lampung return flight (International flights extra).
If you prefer to pay a tiny bit extra you can request the Premium Package which is as above and also includes:
- English speaking surf guide accompanies you for the duration of the tour.
- Photographs of your trip taken on Canon Digital equipment by your surf guide (supplied on disk or your flash drive).
- Daily transport to other breaks and places of interest (Not too far away is a more challenging left, and the nearby town has a nice left & right reef break on bigger swells. Further north are a couple of left and right reef breaks that offer a real challenge on the right conditions. You can also visit the many places of interest in the area including local markets and towns, hot springs, nearby island, forests and handcraft makers).
- Meals during your return transfers from Bandar Lampung airport to the losmen.
- Free large beer each day at losmen.

Please note that Premium Packages are only available from the beginning of April to the end of October.
13 night basic package:
Day 1: Arrive in Jakarta, airport pickup, transfer to hotel in central Jakarta for overnight stay.
Day 2: Morning transfer from hotel to airport for short flight to Bandar Lampung, Sumatra. Airport pickup and approx. 6 hour drive to Losmen, arriving in late afternoon or evening.
Day 3-13: Surf & the various breaks in the area, visit local places of interest, relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Day 14: Early departure from Losmen to Bandar Lampung airport for afternoon flight to Jakarta. Airport pickup and transfer to international flight home or next destination.
