Kandooma Island is 13 hectares in area or roughly about a 20 minute walk around the perimeter. It is located two thirds down the south eastern edge of the South Male Atoll, only 45 minute speedboat ride from the capital Male.  Kandooma has beautiful white sandy beaches around a third of the island for those with kids who love to play in beachsand; or those prefer working on their tans on the beach rather than on the sunloungers around the pool.

With a surf break, Kandooma Right at your front door you will be able to surf awesome waves at your leisure. But with another 6 quality breaks between 5 and 45 minutes of the resort our resident surf guide will take you up to twice daily via Dhoni to these top spots.

The Perfect Wave runs the surf program at Kandooma and with our expert Aussie surf guide on hand, you will get the best waves that are on offer. The resident surf guide is employed by The Perfect Wave and is there to assist all our surf guests. For surf transfer details, see other activities.

We also have an allocation of 15 villas from April to October, so we can confirm your booking immediately without worrying about whether the room type you are after is available. The Perfect Wave has been in partnership with Kandooma since it opened its doors and we are considered one of the family with many friends at the resort. Most of the Perfect Wave team have stayed at the resort and one of the directors have even lived there for 3 months with his family.  so any questions you have about the resort we can easily and confidently answer. The resort has 160 villas in four main categories of beach and Garden villas, Duplex villas, Family villas and Water villas. With the exception of the Garden villas, all the accommodation has been built around the edge of or on the water. Each villa type has been designed with cool clean lines with white washed timber providing warm texture to the unshoed foot. Large picture windows mean that you are only a glance away from the great blue outdoors

Beach Villas - The semi-detached beach villas come with large windows that positively invite the outdoors inside. Whitewashed floor boards evoke a sense of fresh coolness, yet feel warm and textured to bare feet. They feature light summer duvets and massive bath towels, flat screen televisions, a place to plug in your mp3/iPod, indoor out-door showers and wifi broadband. The beach villas are 36 square metres in size.

Duplex Villas - The sea-facing duplex villas offer the luxury of space. Located at the water’s edge, the villas present a striking mix of natural elements and modern design. Bedrooms are on the first floor level and enjoy views of the sea. The living area underneath the bedroom is furnished with designer seating laid out on a carpet of fine white sand. The duplex villas are 72 square metres in size, with 36 square metres on each level.

Family villas - As the name suggests, are ideal for families or a small group, and are the size of two duplex villas together. They offer sleeping space upstairs as well as living and dining below.

Water Villas - Hovering above coral and marine life in the shallow clear waters, Water Villas offer the ultimate Maldives experience.Each Villa has a private sundeck with hammock that in high tide is partially submerged in crystal clear water. Expanisve living space is complemented by a large open bathroom which offers a private outdoor shower and bathtub with views of the water. The Water Villas are 65sqm in size.

Surfing

With a surf break Kandooma Right at your front door, you will be able to surf awesome waves at your leisure. But with another 6 quality breaks between 5 and 45 minutes of the resort, our resident surf guide will take you up to twice daily by dhoni to these top spots.

Full Day surf transfers are a 3 hr trip twice daily to any south male atolls, departure times 9.30am & 2.30pm. Breaks visited are Riptides, Foxys, Twin peaks, Quarters, Lucky Joes and Kates. Kandooma Right is accessible from the resort.

North Male Day Trips -  If the swell is pumping up in North Male, it isn’t hard to get a group together that want to go. The guys bring their partners along and it is a full day out chasing waves, lots of fun. The surf guide will let you know when it is best to go and will organise the day trip with lunch included and beers on the way home.

Facilities

Dining

The aim in the restaurants and bars of Kandooma is to offer “quality through integrity of ingredients.” Orange juice in the morning is freshly squeezed; coffee (even in the rooms) is freshly ground; tea is loose leaf; and bread and ice cream is home made. They offer choice in price as well as in menus.

Kandooma Café

Breakfast (6.30am to 10.30am) - Wide archways let in the sunshine and atoll views. Fresh juice, pressed coffee, an international selection of breakfast items and attendant chefs ready to receive instructions on how you prefer your eggs.

Dinner (6.00 pm to 11.00 pm) - The cafe becomes a warm cave of soft glowing light to present an intimate mood under the stars visible through the skylight 60 feet above. A banquet of travel inspired Mediterranean dishes spiced with flavours of Asia is supplemented by chefs busily working tandoor ovens, teppan grills and rottiseurs.

Poolside

Lunch (10.00am to 11.00pm) - Order from a menu of fresh salads, sandwiches, wood-fired pizza or pick up a choice cut of eye fillet or lamb loin you can grill yourself under the shade of the coconut grove.

The Kitchen (18.30 pm to 11.30 pm) - Diners can choose to sit in elegant comfort looking out over Kandooma channel; out on the beach with your feet in the sand; or reserve a seat at the chef’s table – and engage the chefs in conversation as they prepare meals. The flavour is Thai – Mediterranean with a good representation of seafood. About 15 paces away is the wine room where a choice of 250 wines will see that some indecision will be encountered in selecting a preferred label.

The Deck (5.00 pm to 10.00 pm) - A bohemian expanse of teak planking covering the rooftop of The Kitchen liberally sprinkled with low tables, startlingly blue cushions, bean bags and monolithic granite planters of greenery. It is the ideal place to worship a sunset and the Mojitos of our resident mixologist. After sundown the area is lit entirely by Moroccan lanterns and the stars. Ideal to continue with cocktails and graze on the tapas menu.

Bokkuraa Coffee Club (6.30am to 11.00pm) - Boutique coffees and teas are available along witha daily supply of pastries and homemade ice creams by the coupe or cone.

Take Out and Delivery (24 hours) - Whether you’re returning from a mammoth surf session or a hectic four-dive day, the only thing you might want to do is flop on the lounger and get a pizza in the comfort of your Kandooma home. Muster up enough energy to drag out the compendium and look up what is available. You have a choice of ordering from a list of simple but utterly tempting bites. You will have a choice of picking it up at the agreed time or having it delivered for a one off price. Plates and cutlery are all in your room. They use reusable containers whenever possible but where disposable is unavoidable they use biodegradable food containers. Three different menu styles serve three different times from breakfast, all day and night owl.

The Dive Centre - The Dive Centre is comprehensively equipped to meet the needs of advanced divers but also suitable and thoughtfully set up for absolute beginners.

Spa

The idyllic setting at the COMO Shambhala Spa at Kandooma sets the scene of serenity and calm and is the perfect getaway from all the pressures and demands of today's modern world.  The spa experience at Kandooma is all about energising in a natural environment with its wide range of therapeutic massages and spa treatments in five treatment rooms with breathtaking oceanic views.

Kids Club

Kandooma Kids Club is for ages 4 - 12, and the coordinators develop numerous different activities to amuse the kids while you surf or relax.  Children will learn, create, engage, learn about the fish, flora & fauna around the island, mix cakes, fancy dress......there is no end to the adventures!  Baby sitting services can also be arranged for the littler ones for additional cost.

G'day Josh. Thanks for organizing Shana and my trip to Kandooma. We will definetly be heading back as soon as we can. I missed out on the waves but that can happen anywhere just means I will have to go back earlier in the year. When the the surf is more consistent. I did manage to get a few small waves on the home break. You can definitely see how good it could get if it was bigger. The Resort is fantastic in position, accomodation, food and service. Definitely worth every star. We stayed in an overwater villa which was just AMAZING but talking to other guests nobody had any complaints about there room. At the resort there is something for everybody to do from snorkelling, fishing, kayaking, sailing everything but a golf course. Even though there was no surf our guide Bryan made sure we used our surf transfers with a few day trips about the area snorkelling and sightseeing. Diving with some Manta Rays was a hoot. Overall it was a great holiday and worth every dollar. Thanks Josh and the crew at The Perfect Wave.

I went for the waves. but the resort was fanfastic - exceeded our expectations and this kept the wife happy. no mozzies, or flies, great food, comfie quarters, very relaxing. As for the waves - its years since I had such good waves - just brilliant. I really loved Rip Tides and on a couple of occasions only me and Richie out. 2 people in the water, no wind, 4 foot on the sets - doesn't get much better than that. The Kandooma resort is perfect for a serious surfing or dive base in the Maldives (if your partner does too!) with plenty of luxury Otherwise go with your mates. Hi Gina, Well we are back in NZ and back at work………. Had a great time! All the arrangements went like clockwork. The Kandooma resort was great and exceeded all of our expectations. On the first morning I introduced myself to Richie at breakfast and by 9 am we were on the boat heading for Riptides. Only him and me on board and only the two of us in the water for the 3 hour session. He might have liked it a bit bigger but it suited me down to a tee and I had a fantastic session out there. After that the days kind of rolled together with good surf being had almost every day. I went north in the boat one day to check out the northern breaks (Kate’s and Tucky Joe’s). Tucky Joe’s was a bit crowded so we surfed the left at Twin peaks. It was good – a bit heavier than the rights I had been surfing but still a good session. All in all a fantastic holiday with great waves. So thanks for all the "behind the scenes" organisation and assistance and please pass on a big thank you to Richie for taking such good care of me, and showing me some great waves. Cheers Mike

We've been back a couple of weeks now and we really did have a great time. Kandooma was great for what we needed - the rooms were perfect, location on the island beautiful and weather we couldn't have asked for better. It didn't rain at all and the winds were OK for most of the time. The food on the island was good, plenty to choose from and always filling. We didn't have the buffet lunches or dinner rather just a light meal. The service was great and the prices very reasonable. One of the highlights of the trip was the night fishing trip we did with the kids. My son caught a great sized Trevally (pic attached) and we had it cooked up for lunch the next day, much to the kids delight. Thanks for arranging all the details of the trip (after lots of options!) I am hoping the we will now be having an annual trip like this. Our next destination will either be Fiji again or Samoa. Given this is the second time I have booked with the Perfect Wave, we will definitely use you in the future.

Dear Rhonda, We did have a great time. Anthony enjoyed surfing on the break at the resort but it was too windy to go out on the boat most days so he only did 2 trips. He also managed to collect himself with his new surfboard and required stitches so we have tested the medical facilities and they were fine! The staff were great, they loved the boys and we didn't have any problems with getting food made up for our baby each night. Overall extremely happy with everything.

Kandooma was a great place to relax and get away from it all. Big enough to feel you were walking off breakfast, lunch or dinner yet you are never more than a nice stroll from anywhere. Regards Nick Dear Gina, we have just got back from 1 week in Kandooma and we had a fantastic time. The resort was excellent and the food sensational. We were lucky to have the pick of the surf right outside our villa’s at Kandooma Right, though we did make use of the boat trips organised by Mark the Perfect Wave guide to see some of the local alternatives. This was a “boy’s trip”, but I’d definitely recommend it for couples or those with young children. The Spa was also high quality and helped bend us back into shape after 6 hours surfing each day. G'day Jamie, Mate thanks for every thing you and Marie done for us in planning our honeymoon/surf trip. The duplex they put us in was true to your word absolutely amazing, right on the take off zone for the right. The staff at the resort are very welcoming and can't do enough for you. We managed to get three good days of surf, two out the front where Charlie and myself were the only ones out exchanging head to head and a half barrels for about 3hrs. The other days were smaller but still really fun. Mate i can't speak highly enough of Charlie as a surf guide, the resort seems to attract some very average surfers but he manages to keep them all happy and get everybody there fair share of waves. The only down fall about the trip was that we had to leave after 10 days, another 10 would of been perfect... Hi there! Yes can' t believe we've been back a week! Mate it was fantastic!, surf not great but picked up at end of week and where our villa was it was just a stumble across the sand. All good, food was great we thought - had not expected it to be so good, but I was suprised how reasonable it was for price - and try as I might I could not drink my way through the premium package :-)! but it was lovely. After spending 3 months living at Kandooma Resort, setting up the Surf program there with my family, i believe that i experienced everything that Kandooma has to offer and then some. the First thing i can say about the resort is wow, the accommodation and facilities are more 5 star than 4. The restaurant's and food never let me down once in 3 months, with quality, fresh and innovative meals every day, the whole family was catered for. The best thing about the resort is not the awesome pool, massive array of water activities to do, kids club, spa, gym or even the perfect right hand point break at your front doorstep. It is the staff! After spending many years visiting resorts around the world or the Maldives, it is hard to think of anywhere that compared to Kandooma for service. Dear Gina, Kandooma Resort Maldives is an excellent holiday destination which I believe caters for families and individuals. A top quality resort that my wife Alina and myself and Jorja our 3 year old girl all enjoyed. (our 2nd time). The food was excellent, weather the same, accommodation and service unbelievable. The waves I shouldn’t say, but were world class. We have been in August/September and this year Apr/May with you and have had 3-6 foot plus waves. I’m not one to brag, but with minimal crowds (I mean minimal) and perfect conditions, you will want to go back. This is a gem of a place where you meet other nationalities not just surfers and have a ball. Hi Gina, Just thought I would let you know we had a GREAT holiday!!! We had a really good time with Jamie and his family - I fell in love with his daughter Kali. The place was beautiful and the water was as clear as you said. Chris got some really good surf as well. All in all - the best holiday we have been on and we will certainly be back. Hi Gina, Just letting you know our trip was sensational - I kind of went hoping it would be good, but it was a hundred times better than anything I'd hoped for. We copped a great swell, the resort was fantastic, our villa was right on the takeoff zone (at least until we got moved because the swell came over our part of the island). We met some fantastic people - Mark our surf guide was terrific and Jamie and his family were great too. On top of all that there were people with great cameras and we have some fantastic pictures. Thanks heaps for recommending Kandooma - it really turned it on for us! Bruce

Our trip to Kandooma was amazing!!! We had such a great time! The resort was beautiful and all the staff extremely friendly. We tried to get out and do something different everyday - whether it be snorkelling, cruising, surfing or playing volleyball. We also dined on some really lovely food, the chef at the Kitchen restaurant even met with us one day to discuss anything we might like off the menu, resulting in yellow fin tuna sashimi (caught that day!) and a lobster pasta to die for. The surf guide Brian and his partner were really lovely, taking us to some amazing breaks and even to Manta Point where I was lucky enough to snorkel with 8 manta rays! I think my partner would have to say that the best part was the surfing, the waves were just incredible being minimum head high. His favourite was actually Kandooma Right which literally breaks onto the shore of the island, and there were about another 4 within 20 minutes of the resort. Our sincerest thank you for our increased luggage allowance - after 5 days in Singapore we wouldn't have made it to Male without it! We have already set the wheels in motion to head over there again next year Lauren - WA Sept09

Hi Gina, Just a quick email to say that we're back from our trip to the Maldives and to thank you for your help with our Kandooma Booking. Glenn and I had a WONDERFUL time at Kandooma - thought the resort and island were great, accommodation fantastic, food superb, staff always friendly and helpful without being pushy, infinity pool gorgeous (complimentary iced water and sunscreen at the pool appreciated) - plus all the included extras like the fresh orange juice + press/teas/fresh coffee/ipod speakers/gorgeous shampoos + shower gels in the bathrooms etc really added to the experience. (Not to mention the cocktails and tapas at the The Deck and the best massage I have ever had in the Spa - 2 hours of total bliss:) And fantastic snorkelling nearby! As you can see I'm quite happy to rave about it. Their occupancy was only about 40% while we were there which is a shame for them, but I guess it was the off-season - we hope they do well, with all their fresh innovative ideas, they deseve to! The weather wasn't great while we were there - very windy, and Glenn didn't get great surf but good enough for him to have some fun waves and to see the area's potential and he's quite keen to return again, but maybe at a slightly different time of year. Pele was a lovely guy and happy to do or go anywhere to look for a surf (as were the other guys in the water activity centre) and the speedboat they took him out on was luxurious. He also had some good waves at the Kandooma right - we've already figured out which villa we might request next time which looks out over the break!
