Ouano Bungalows, Noumea, limits guests to 20 at any time which means a relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere both at the camp and at the nearby breaks.

The Ouano Bungalows is one hour drive from Noumea and half an hour from la Tontouta international airport.

The camp is an unforgettable place for surfers and non surfers alike. The grounds are surrounded by water which will add to the soothing ambiance. On the eastern side, a saltwater lagoon has been created and is used as a fish pond. Early risers will have a chance to see some spectacular sunrises on the mountain chain. On the western side, a white sand beach faces the two coral islands Ndigoro and Kondoyo and this beach is a great spot to watch the sun set.

The camp is settled on a peninsula adjacent to the Oua Tom tribe (pronounced Wa Tom), and Ouano make it a point of honor to keep good relations with their neighbours. A relationship of mutual respect between the camp and the tribe has been weaved through collaboration and through their respect of the natural environment surrounding the camp. During your stay you will have the opportunity to visit the tribe and enjoy a traditional meal called bougna (pronounced boonia).

The camp has 5 fan cooled beachfront bungalows with a great view of the lagoon and the islands. Each bungalow can accommodate up to 4 people. They come with wooden beds, white linen, mosquito nets and basic storage. Bedding can be a combination of double/twin beds and single beds depending on needs.

Bathroom facilities are in a separate block and are equipped with hot water showers; they have separate facilities for men and women.

The camp has a restaurant and bar. The cuisine is of French and Melanesian influence and uses fresh produce from the area’s farms including fresh meat and fresh fruit and vegetables, and of course fresh fish from the lagoon. All these fresh produce are superbly cooked by their chefs.

At the Ouano Bungalows bar you will find the essentials: beers, wines, cocktails and sodas

There is no credit card facilities, so make sure to get local currency from the ATM at the airport. Don’t forget to account for any additional activities you might do. There are banks and ATMs at La Foa, 20 minutes away if you run out.

Equipment for on site activities such as kayaking, volleyball, racket ball, pétanque, rugby, volley ball and soccer are provided free of charge.

For all water sports and leisure, two Jayak Surfari speedboats offer the possibility to go surfing, to go on eco tours or to simply get dropped off on a coral island surrounded by the aquamarine waters of the lagoon.

Snorkelling: dive in warm and clear waters in the lagoon and enjoy the beauty of the Pacific Ocean. See exotic and multicolored fish, sea turtles, dolphins, sea snakes, live coral… From the boat you can see dugongs and dolphins all year round and whales from July to September. BYO gear.

Kite surf: strong trade winds (20-25 knots) in the afternoons during summertime offer perfect conditions for kite surfers. At high tide you can start from the surf camp’s beach and go for a long ride in the lagoon. The boat can take experienced kiters out to the barrier reef so they can enjoy the waves. World kite tour comes once a year to New Caledonia in November, and Ouano is the place they come to for waves.

Windsurf : the same strong trade winds during summertime provide unforgettable rides for windsurfers in the lagoon or, for the expert, on the world class left which world famous windsurfer Robert Teritehau never fails to ride every time he comes back home from Hawaii.

Fishing: the fishing guide can take you out on his boat to catch exotic and delicious fish like yellow fin tuna, coral trout, mahi mahi, wahoo, giant trevally, swordfish,  barracuda, etc,  depending on the season and weather conditions. The guide has a particular liking for fly fishing, but does all types of fishing (popper, jigg, etc).

Canyoning  : experience the thrill of canyoning down the Dony waterfalls. The excursion starts at 8 am in La Foa, and ends mid afternoon. Involves an hour driving, 2 hours walking and three hours of canyoning. No experience needed.

Horse Riding: The La Foa ranch is just 20 minutes away and organises horse back tours (half day or 2 hours).

Start from the valley, cruise through the forest all the way to the hill tops for a fantastic panorama of the village, the mountain chain and the lagoon.

Bushwalks: Louis from the Oua Tom Tribe will be your host. As an experienced guide he can teach you a lot about the secrets of the mountains and can take care of both beginners and confirmed trekkers.

Skydiving: A fully certified Sky diving club, affiliated to the French Federation, operates on the nearby air strip, just 5 minutes from Ouano Bungalows. The club offers the possibility to go tandem sky diving from 11000 feet, which will give you a good 40 seconds to appreciate the mighty power of gravity. Then the instructor will open the parachute and keep you hang gliding for ten minutes. Requires a medical check up, and a 20 minute briefing.

Golf: the Paillotes de la Ouenghi golf club is half an hour away from Ouano. This offers the possibility for surfers to surf in the morning and play golf in the afternoon.

That’s how life should be lived!

Meals:

Buffet breakfast includes tea, coffee, hot chocolate, juices, toasts, cereals, eggs and bacon.  For surfers lunch is prepared in the morning and will be on board the boat in an ice box. The lunch box will be filled with water, juices, sandwiches, salads and biscuits.  For non surfers lunch is served at the restaurant and will consist of a main and a desert.  For dinner you will have a three course menu of the day with different French/Tahitan/Caledonian/Australian style dishes over the week.

For all bookings you should warn us if you have a specific diet or allergy so they can cater for your needs before your arrival.

All guests are met personally by Ouano staff at the airport and transferred to Ouano Bungalows in their van. The drive takes 30 to 40 minutes.

Child Policy

1 or 2 children (4 to 12 years old) free of charge in the room of 2 adults if using existing bedding & not exceeding maximum bungalow occupancy. Children aged 4-12 years old are offered a 50% discount on full board rates. Children under 4 years old are free of charge for all buffet meals at the camp.

The fishing at Nekweta was excellent with over 30 fish caught in one day. Surfed a right hand reef break rarely surfed. Ouano is an amazing setup with long left handers and barrels. What a memorable trip!

Hi Gina, The trip was great, we got some excellent waves and met some wonderful people. The left hander at the first surf camp (Ouano lefts), was amazing, a two to three hundred metre wave that got wrapped in around an off shore reef. As the wave wrapped around it walled up creating some tube sections. we surfed for 6 hours on the first day at double head height, 8 hours on day two at 1.5 head height and 7 hours on day 3 at head height. The wave was easy to surf as our group had varying levels of surfers and everyone got plenty of waves. There were 8 of us and we pretty much surfed this wave on our own except for 3 locals who came out in the arvo. Nekweta was the 2nd place and a pleasant reprieve as we were greeted with smiles and treated like we were wanted there. Manu and his wife provided excellent food and service. The waves at the Nekweta were not as good on the first two days there as the wind was up a little. We surfed a right these two days. It was around chest height and short ride on the first day and the second the swell picked up and early in the morning there were some double to triple head height sets rolling in. At this size the wave was hollow and had a difficult take off and potential tube section just down the line. Day 6, the 3rd day with Manu we surfed secrets. This wave was a tubing left hander at just over head height on the take off. You simply stood up and pulled in for a barrel. Very makeable wave and would be quite a skeptical when the right swells were hitting it. Overall it was an excellent holiday with some of the best waves of my life ridden. In fact halfway through day 2 of the trip after catching a near 300m screamer i was quoted saying to one of the guys "I've got the best wave of my life 7 times today".
