About this Surf Resort

Overview

Rubio Plantation Retreat is in the remote central northeastern coast of New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. From here you can search the remote coastline and offshore islands for an undiscovered wave.

Rubio Plantation Retreat is located 220 Km from Kavieng, which is about 3 hours drive down the scenic Buluminski Highway. Rubio Plantation starts from the beach and goes up into the mountains. It has many trails to explore and a cool beautiful stream that comes out of the ground at the base of a giant tree and runs for several hundred meters and then disappears again into the ground. It then resurfaces and then runs into the ocean along a white sandy beach.

Owned and operated by Shane and Annette Clark - Shane is originally from Hawaii and has been surfing all his life. He first surfed New Ireland in the mid eighties as a teenager. Annette is from New Ireland and also enjoys catching some waves.

At Rubio they limit the number of guests to15 so there is never a crowd. They also limit the number of surfers at the retreat to 10 and the number of visiting surfers to the central coast region is limited to 20 by the Central New Ireland Surf Management Plan.

Rubio has a good, consistent break right on the beach directly in front of the retreat. There are also many other good breaks in the local area. Surf spots range from mellow longboard waves (depending on swell size and direction) to fast and hollow reef passes. There is vast range of both rights and lefts open to the varying swell directions. There are boats and vehicles available to take you out to the many excellent breaks on the offshore islands or along the coast.

The Central New Ireland Surf Club in cooperation with the New Ireland Surf Alliance and the Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea has established the Central New Ireland Surf Management Plan to benefit both the incoming surf tourist and the traditional resource owners. The plan ensures the incoming surf tourist that there will only be a maximum of 20 international surfers at any time surfing within the managed area. The plan ensures the traditional resource owners that there are real benefits from tourism flowing into their communities. The plan also ensures that surf tourism is sustainable in the region.

SAPNG-300x287The Central New Ireland Surf Management Plan is one of four surf management plans in New Ireland Province. It covers the central north-east coast and some of the east coast islands. The fees that are generated through the plan are distributed to the communities to be used for community projects and some of the ongoing needs of the communities such as school supplies and aid post supplies. A portion of the fees are also used to help develop surfing as a sport at the village level. This sustainable style of managing the surf resource benefits all involved.

The Perfect Wave is an official and preferred member of Surfing Association in Papua New Guinea. We pay yearly membership fees and respect the surf management plans that are in place to keep the waves uncrowded - and these fees go directly to the local people whom waves we get to surf, ensuring the local schools get well-needed funds.

Accommodation

Rubio's accommodation consists of 6 separate bungalows. All bungalows are made from native materials and are located along the beachfront. Each bed is fitted with a mosquito net.

There is 1 standard and 2 deluxe bungalows which are twin share while the 2 family bungalows consists of 2 separate bedrooms each. The master bedroom has a queen size bed with the other bedroom is twin share. Extra beds can be fitted in a room if needed.

Hi, Rhonda I was with the group of 10 that went to Rubio (PNG) 11 - 23 Feb 2012. We were all blown away by the experience. Although the waves weren't epic, we were able to get quality waves everyday. In fact our bodies gave out before the waves did... Shane, Annette and their staff were excellent. Always willing to take us anywhere/anytime to find the Perfect wave. Shane's knowledge of the whole area and what swell/wind works where is amazing. However, the most satisfying aspect for me, was knowing we were the only surfers there. I have attached a couple of photos! Thanks again for organising our trip, I look forward to the next one. Regards Dale

Hi Rhonda Just wanted you to know that the trip went really well and all the guys were so impressed with the venue and the hosts. Shane was exceptional with his knowledge of the place, his eagerness to take us anywhere/anytime and the respect he generates in the area. The kids adore him. The experience was more than just the waves and most guys were blown away with the culture and the fact we were the only surfers on the whole island. On behalf of all the guys that went, thanks again for organising everything.

Hey Rhonda! Just wanted to say hi and thanks again for all your help setting me up with Rubio. I had a ball even though the surf wasn’t epic we surfed everyday and even got to surf 4 spots that had never been surfed before. Shane is a really great host and his wife Annette and her staff in the kitchen more than looked after our needs when it came to food, simple but delicious! And the home baked breads were amazing! Local people were so friendly, and it really made the experience so much more fulfilling. Its only early days for Rubio but I can see that it is going to be as popular as Nusa island in the not to distant future. I spoke to guys that stayed at Nusa on my way home, and it sounded like we definitely got the best of the surf at Rubio and the surrounding areas. Thanks Rhonda Look forward to booking my next trip through you.
