- Description
-
Naninya Island - another example of Fiji surfing at its best. It is situated about 1km from the southern tip of Kadavu Island, picking up wind and swell from many different directions. The trade winds (south-easterlies) are most days of the year except in the summer season (December through to March) when there is regularly a north-easterly wind. The different wind angle makes different breaks offshore.
Naninya Island Resort was sold in May 2008 and is has reopened 7th July with a whole new Australian management team in place. The standard of service and food has been significantly upgraded. They now have a highly-experienced Australian resort manager in place ,as well as a top-class chef who has been the long term head chef in a well known 5-Star resort. The bures are currently all being upgraded as are the facilities available to the guests.
The island comprises of 30 acres and has several walking tracks around and guided walks up “King Kong Mountain” ,an extinct volcano just across a sheltered coral lagoon - named after it was the location of the 1935 film.

Naninya Island Surf Breaks:
-
King Kong Left - This is a 40-metre long wave that has a take-off in deep water, reducing risk of coral scratches and is good for intermediate to advanced surfers. The average size is 3 ft to 5 ft offshore, but it can hold up to 15 ft plus. It was named King Kong because of the famous 1935 movie which was partly filmed underneath the mountain Nabukelevuira. This mountain also has a moderating effect on the wind at the King Kong Left break so that it is still operating when other areas are blown out.
-
King Kong Right - This is often 6ft plus face height. This is an exciting very fast tube for a more advanced rider. The trade winds are onshore for this break, but the summer wind (north easterly) is offshore. It is best early morning before the trade winds start, or late afternoon if the trade winds die down.
- The Bombi - 10 minutes from Naninya Island Resort by boat, can be seen from the resort deck.
-
Middle Daku - Daku is the Fijian name for the beautiful sandy beach. In the middle of the beach, 60 metres from the sand, is a coral break. It breaks both right and left but the right is generally better. The trade winds are onshore/across this break but the summer wind (north-easterly) is directly offshore. It is also best early morning before the trade winds start.
-
Little Daku - This break is often suitable for the less experienced surfer. This is also an excellent area to enjoy a free "getting started" surfing lesson by Naninya’s surf guide.
They are not just a surfing resort, but offer the full range of blue water sports including SCUBA diving, big game fishing, wind -and kite-surfing and just plain relaxing on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Naninya Island is Fiji’s most southerly resort and has recently been discovered as a world-class dive location with some of Fiji’s deepest waters, year-round outstanding visibility and abundant fish life. The area is believed to be a major breeding area for manta rays as they are frequently seen with very young juveniles cruising along the spectacular wall drop offs. Diveing sites suit all levels of divers - from novice to serious adventure divers.Naninya Island is a fisherman’s heaven... It has truly world-class deep-sea and small-boat fishing. There is exceptional surface game fishing for blue and black marlin, wahoo, yellowfin & dogtooth tuna, groper, walu, giant trevally, mahi mahi and many more.
