Bintang - Mentawai

Do you want to surf the best waves in the world, travelling in luxury? Bintang is an ocean going 110ft Schooner, the largest Western owned vessel in the Mentawai Islands and is set up exclusively for surf charters. The boat is owned and operated by Daryl and Ashton Robinson - keen and experienced Australian surfers. They are experienced Mentawai operators who know where to find the best waves possible to surf through out the trip.

Built by Classic Yachts, Freemantle Western Australia in 1988 Bintang is powered by a Gardiner 6XLB165 BHP 165 hp engine and has a cruising speed of 8 kts, 15 kts under full sail. Their ocean going 110ft Schooner the largest Western vessel in the Mentawai Islands and is set up exclusively for surf charters.

Bintang can sleep 14 guests in air-conditioned comfort, but 10 guests is considered a full booking. The 25 x 20ft saloon has a state of the art entertainment centre which includes TV, VCR, Digital and video play backs of days surfing. There is also a DVD / CD stereo surround sound system. On deck is spacious with a seating area for 16. It is perfect for tropical nights sampling the local cuisine and freshly caught seafood after a hard days surfing.

Bintang has a 30 ft skiff which travels at 30-40 knots to get you to the off shore wind fast when conditions change. It's set up for awesome deep sea fishing day or night. Also a quick transit back to Padang due to any emergency in 3-4 hours. From the skiff, which is a great shooting platform, videos and still shots will be taken of guests. Use of all equipment: skin diving, fishing rods & reels etc is free of charge.

Captain & Crew

Daryl Robinson, the boat owner and captain, has been living in Mentawai for 12 years so he knows local surf conditions more than well. With 30 years of experience on boats and an Australian licence Master 4 Ocean Going, you can be sure you will be in good hands. Before working on Bintang, he was a captain of Navistar for 4 years, in Mentawai.

This was my first trip to the Mentawai region, so anticipation was quite high on what to expect. I must say that the boat was very comfortable and was more than adequate for my length of stay. The crew were very friendly and their service was great. Having breakfast ready within minutes of getting back from a surf was greatly appreciated. The food was a great combination of Western style as well as some more traditional indonesian. Not being much of a seafood eater this was very welcomed. I got some great photos from the trip and the crew did a great job sitting in the channel for hours at a time to get those shots. We had a great mix of waves and I must say an all round great Holiday. I can't wait to go back. Thanks to all on the Bintang and Rhonda at The Perfect Wave!
