The ultimate Brazilian surf holiday - Florianopolis
This adventure offers much more than your average surf camp. The Surf
You’re not travelling thousands of miles from home to go surfing in Brazil on an average break. Florianopolis is Brazil’s surf capital and host of South America's only WCT pro surf tour event. Surfing in Florianopolis (or Floripa, as the locals call it) means consistent swell, great shape, incredible variety, and a culture that lives and breathes surfing.
With nearly 100 miles of pristine coastline, Floripa is blessed with over 40 beautiful beaches and is home to many world-class surf spots such as Praia Mole, Joaquina, Campeche and Lagoinha do Leste, while numerous other renowned breaks lie within close reach. You will have your choice of everything from deserted breaks - where the only competition for waves will be an occasional dolphin passing by; to vibrant beaches packed with Brazil’s most beautiful people. Although Brazil may be best known for its powerful beach breaks, Florianopolis and the south of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina have a diverse mix of points and rivermouths as well, providing a tremendous variety of waves suitable for all levels of surfer. Beginners typically enjoy learning amid the calm waters and gentle swells at beaches such as Barra da Lagoa and Galheta while more experienced surfers have a seemingly unlimited variety of spots from which to choose from.
Florianopolis sees its most consistent surf during the months of April through October when the southern hemisphere’s Atlantic seas send major swells pounding into the South American coastline.
November-March is perfect for those looking for a balance between great surf, incredible nightlife (shifted up a few notches during the Brazilian vacation season of New Year’s through to Carnaval), fantastic weather and warm water temperatures. Though the surf is slightly less intense, you are still likely to score solid waves (overheads not uncommon) thanks to the consistent swell and large diversity of surf spots on and around the island, at least a few of which are likely to be “on” at just about any given moment.
In addition to world-class surfing, you’ll also have access to a tremendous variety of additional activities and extreme sport adventures. There is kitesurfing, windsurfing, yoga, sandboarding, paragliding, snorkeling, hiking, river rafting, horse riding, motorcycle tours, boat tours, massage therapy……take your pick!
Kitesurfing in Brazil
The best kitesurfing conditions in Florianopolis arrive during springtime (September, October and November). However, given the island’s unique topography and exposure to the Atlantic tradewinds, it generally offers excellent kiting conditions all the way through March. Even during the rest of the year, Florianopolis generally provides suitable kiting conditions from mid-afternoon on, offering overall 250+ kiteable days per year. For beginners, you will have coordinated kite surfing lessons that will have you enjoying the sport in no time with expert instruction, top notch equipment and in complete safety. We recommend a minimum of a 7 night stay to ensure completion of at least one training module. Our entry level module focuses on the basics and will take you through all phases of wind and tidal awareness, site assessment, and safety procedures necessary for proper kiting.
On day 1 you will start off on dry land learning the basic techniques of kite handling with a practice kite on the sand dunes of Campeche or Joaquina, before progressing on day 2 to the lagoon, doing body drags and water starts with full equipment. This is followed by 1-2 days of boat assisted starts. Most beginners will be getting up and riding by the end of day 3. If time and conditions permit, you’ll be able to put your skills to the test, stepping up to a larger kite and taking on upwinding in Module 2 where you will improve your riding stance and ability to ride further distances. Topics covered in this module include: rigging and tuning, assisted and self-launching/landing, relaunching from the water and performance tips including edging and multi-directional riding. With the benefit of the expert kite instructors you will be speeding across the waves and flying high in no time!
For experienced kitesurfers, there are guided kitesurfing excursions in Florianopolis and nearby kiting hotspots along the Santa Catarina coastline. The kite guides are bilingual, have years of kite experience and tremendous local wind/wave knowledge.
The Accommodation
