- Overview
The Caroline Islands form a large archipelago of widely scattered islands in the western Pacific Ocean, northeast of New Guinea. Politically they are divided between the Federated States of Micronesia in the eastern part of the group, and Palau at the extreme western end.
The islands vary from mountainous, barrier reef lined islands, small and large atolls, low coralline islands sitting upon isolated platform reefs, partly sunken atolls and submerged reefs. In total there are 5 low coral islands, 29 atolls, 4 mountainous islands with barrier or fringing reefs, 6 partly sunken atolls and numerous submerged carbonate banks. These fascinating islands are divided into the four states of Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap.
Apart from fantastic surf, these islands are scattered with waterfalls, long mangrove channels, ancient ruins, spectacular crystal clear water for snorkeling and diving, and unbelievable fishing.
Kosrae is one of the further east islands, approximately 15km wide and 13km long. It is almost a clover leaf shape with a thin, low lying coastal strip of mangrove forest and valleys to a rugged mountainous interior. The whole island is surrounded by a beautiful fringing reef with passages creating perfect waves.
Kosrae is untouched by tourism and many aspects of the western world. There are no shopping malls, no movie theatres, no nightclubs, and no ATM's! Pure paradise for those looking to get away from it all - particularly the surfing crowds.

- P1- series of right hand reef sections ranging from rip-able walls to barrels. Faces offshore/ side-offshore in the trade winds. Handles swell from 2-8 foot
- Sidedish - Intense and extremely hollow reef break providing a 2-4 second righthand barrel. Faces straight offshore in the trade winds. Breaks from 2-6 foot
- Snoop Dogg’s - Fast, hollow lefthand reefbreak. Faces offshore/side-offshore into the trade winds. Fun and rip-able when wind affected. Flawless 4 second barrel when offshore (comparable to Pipeline in Hawaii, but more perfect!). Handles from 1-6 foot
- WC’s - Extremely heavy Righthand slab reef break ala Teahupoo, Our’s, or The Box. Sideshore in the trade winds. Surfable by those who dare whenever the wind is good. Handles from 2-10 foot
- Airports - Right hand reef/pointbreak with multiple sections. Picks up wraparound wind swell when there is no N groundswell. Extremely fast, heavy righthander when ground swell is running. Sideshore in the trade winds. Handles from 1-8 foot
- Season & Weather
The season for surfing in the Caroline Islands runs from October to March when waves are powerful and barrels are frequent.
Caroline Islands enjoys a tropical maritime climate which is consistently hot and humidity is normally around 80-90%. Temperatures generally range between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius year round. The islands lie in a high precipitation area which is what gives Kosrae it’s rich green colour and thick forests.
