Overview

With over 7,100 islands, the Philippines is definitely a destination where there is something for everyone. The Filipino people themselves are a mix of Malay stock, a little of Chinese, American, Spanish and Arab blood, this results from a long history of western rule, with touches of merchants and traders that have influenced the country over 100’s of years. With this mix of cultures and traditions, the country has a great balance where east meets west.

Made up of three main island groups Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, Manila is the capital and hub for most international travellers before they make their way out to any of the islands, offering an array of different experiences.

The Philippines is known worldwide for its surfing which can be suitable for all levels. La Union, located just 4hrs from Manila on the northwest coast of Luzon, is easy to get to and the beach set ups are perfect for beginners to give it a go. Baler and Infanta in Quezon, and Daet in Camarines Norte give the more intermediate to advanced surfers a run for their money, it’s a little further to go but you will not be disappointed. If that is still not enough for the thrill seekers, the west coast is waiting for you to get out there and explore it!

Siargao Island is probably the name you have heard before. It is 800kms south of Manila, is known as the surfing capital of the Philippines, and is host to international surfing events. Siargao has the most consistent breaks in the Philippines. It faces the Pacific Ocean and the Philippine Deep, the second deepest water across the globe at more than 11km below sea level. This deep trench combined with the narrow continental shelf creates excellent surfing in Siargao. “Cloud Nine” ring any bells??

Surf Breaks

All breaks, unless other mentioned, are for intermediate and above, but all are surfable by beginners in low season. These are the most popular surf spots but there are hundreds more that can be accessed by boat.

  • Cloud 9 – Only just discovered by travelling surfers in the late 1980’s, Cloud 9 has been voted by surfers to be one of the five best waves in the world.  It's a powerful right hand wave that breaks straight out of deep water and focuses it's energy straight at the beach. The left is a go getter too.
  • Jacking Horse – Another powerful, hollow coral reef break, mostly right, and also gets 6-10ft.
  • Quiksilver – Same as above, left and right.
  • Rock Island – Powerful, hollow fast right hand point break, starts working at 3ft and gets up to 12ft.
  • Stimpy's – Hollow, fast, fun left hand point break, 6-10ft.
  • Aparri – Suitable for Beginners to Pro’s, left and right off the pier, gets 3-6ft.
  • San Juan – Powerful, hollow , right hand beach and reef break.
  • Bagasbas – gentle beach break, left and right, suitable for beginners.
Season & Weather

Philippines

The Philippines isn’t known for it’s consistency but if everything falls into place it will be a truly unforgettable experience that will stay with you forever. The best time to go surfing in Siargao is from July to November, when the easterly Mindanao current feeds the islands with waves that come from one of the deepest parts of the Pacific.

For game fishers, game fishing season is in August.

The weather is generally constant year-round with an average temperature of 30° C. Although there are no great variations in the climate, Siargao only tends to have the rainy season (December to February) which is characterised by periodic rain showers, and the dry season. Siargao Island is influenced by the winds and currents from the Pacific Ocean, intensified by the Mindanao current running westward through the Siargao Strait.

Water temperatures hover around 21-25’C
