Huey 1 - Mentawai

The Mentawai Islands offer some of the best and most consistent waves in the world. Huey has been operating in these waters since 1999 providing surfers with a variety of waves to suit all levels of ability.

HUEY is an 82-ft ex-customs patrol vessel customised for surf charters. Built and launched by the Japanese Government in 1978, HUEY is one of the faster boats serving the Mentawai Islands. Finishing in March 2009, Huey underwent a four month refit which involved rebuilding the main engines, plus new propellers and shafts to ensure reliability and safety for their guests. She is powered by two V8 Nissan 400hp diesels so getting there in all weather conditions is never a problem.

Captain & Crew

Steve, the owner of Huey will be your host and surf guide. With 15 years experience traveling through Indonesia and its waters he’ll be sure to get you the best waves on offer. Amril, Huey’s Indonesian captain is a born and bred Padang local and also has 20 years experience at sea. He knows these waters like no other and has been working on western charter boats for 7 years.

Khairul the Chef and all round good guy will provide the food. His cooking is second to none. After finishing his trade certificate in Bukitingi, he started work on Huey in 2000 and has been with the boat ever since.

Amon and Hendra the two deckhands and dinghy drivers, also have lots of experience on the ocean.

Ducted air conditioning throughout the vessel ensures your preferred room temperature. There's plenty of accessible board storage and the spacious, covered front deck area is a favourite among guests for catching the cool breeze or lazing in the afternoon shade.

Rhonda at Perfect Wave travel organised everything from start to finish and the whole trip ran like clockwork. Huey Surf Charters were unreal. The captain Steve Sewell knew the place like the back of his hand and in particular tipped us into spots that were pumping with minimal crowds. I still cant get over how many surfs I had on my own or with only a couple of guys out. I actually surfed Maccaronis on my own for and hour and then another hour with only my son and I. Although the Huey wasnt able to travel, Sewelly organised another boat which was more than adequate, and his staff were fantastic, Karool the cook was awesome and Amon the fist hand couldnt try any harder to help anyone out and never stopped smiling. Overall an awsome experience for my first trip to the Mentawais.

Hey Jamie, sorry for getting back to you so late mate! Thought I’d let u know about our trip for what its worth!! For starters we had the best time of our lives it was unreal! Mentawais were everything I expected and more! Loads of funny stories and all the boys went mad! The other fellas we had on the boat we pretty much made instant mates for life with! All legends! But us boys being slack as, we haven’t got any photos together yet but we do have heaps! The other fellas sent some dvds of pics and videos to us, there awesome! Anyway yeah waves where awesome weather was awesome, the boat and the crew were all awesome! Can’t wait to do it all again! Hopefully doing a round the world trip may next year just in the process of organising it now!! Anyway just like to thank you guys for everything you did for us! I know a lot of hassles went into it but it was all worth it in the end! I dream about that trip just about every night! I’ll try send a few pics through! cheers mate! Natt & crew – Tas May08
