Owen Wright (Culburra, NSW) reigned supreme today en-route to taking out the prestigious seven-star rated Mambo Pro Junior presented by Dakine.
In front of a large crowd at Manly Beach in pristine one-metre conditions, the Mambo Pro Junior presented by Dakine saw Wright taking down the hottest junior surfers in the country.
“I’m so stoked,” Wright said after defeating wonder-kid Tamaroa McComb (Tahiti/Gold Coast, QLD) in one of the highest scoring and electrifying finals of the year.
“This is the most important and biggest win of the year so far for me.”
In what was a world-class final, pitting two of the hottest commodities on the global surfing landscape against each other, what transpired was electric.
Throwing down futuristic moves intertwined with aerial artistry and power surfing, the crowd was on the edge of their seats.
“That was probably the hardest final I’ve ever surfed,” Wright admitted after accumulating a total heat score of 17.40 (out of a possible 20).
“Tamaroa surfed amazing and I knew I had to be on my game to win – I couldn’t relax for a second.”
As well as claiming $5000 in cash, Wright also received a luxury boat trip on the MV Midas worth $4000 through the Mentawai Islands thanks to The Perfect Wave Travel Co.
“I’m almost more excited about winning the trip,” Wright said.
“It’s definitely an awesome prize – I can’t wait to use it.”
Having won four ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series events in 2008, Wright now sits fifth in the ratings.
“This is my fourth win of the year and I’m sitting fifth – it just shows how high the standard is at the moment.”
“It’s crazy,” Wright said.

“It took me a while to get going out there,“ Wright said after progressing through to the fourth round.
Having had a year of up’s and down’s, seeing him competing at the highest echelon of competitive surfing (ASP World Tour) and being out of the water through a spate of injuries, Wright
“It’s definitely been a weird year,” Wright said reflectively.
“It took me until about half way through the year to get going, but now I feel confident in my surfing.”
With the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series already wrapped up by Stuart Kennedy (Lennox Head, NSW), Wright has his sights firmly set on making the ASP World Junior Championships.
“That’s my focus for the rest of the year – I really want to get there.”

“I’m so stoked, I can’t really believe it,” Callinan said after progressing through to the round of 24.
“It’s the best result I’ve ever had at a (ASP Australasian) Pro Junior event.”
Mixing it with the best in business and being a seven-star rated event, the Mambo Pro Junior presented by Dakine is of the upmost importance for all surfers looking to solidify momentum and ratings points going into the business end of the year.
